Packing a healthy lunch for your children is essential for their growth, development, and overall well-being. With a few strategic choices and some creativity, you can ensure that your child enjoys nutritious and balanced meals, even when they are away from home.
I usually make “Bento” (lunch box) for my boys. Japanese style bento refers to a single-portion meal packed in a box, which is as much an art form as it is a culinary endeavor. Not only does the meal taste good, but it also looks visually appealing. Typically, a bento box contains a variety of foods, including rice, fish or meat, and pickled or cooked vegetables. The balance of flavors and colors makes this meal both nutritious and appetizing.
What’s the Deal with Bento?
Basically, it’s a packed lunch, Japanese style! But it’s not just slapping a sandwich in a bag. It’s about making it look good AND taste good. Think rice, some protein, and a bunch of colorful veggies all snuggled together in a box. It’s like a mini-adventure in a lunchbox, and it’s all about balance and making your mealtime a little bit special.
What You’ll Need (The Fun Stuff!):
- Rice, duh! Go for that sticky Japanese rice, it makes life easier. If you’re new to this, look for “sushi rice” or “short-grain Japanese rice” at your local Asian grocery store or even some regular supermarkets. No rice cooker? Chill! You’ve got options! Microwavable rice is your new best friend – quick, easy, and totally convenient.
- Protein Power! Chicken, fish, eggs, tofu – whatever floats your boat. Pro-tip: Leftover grilled chicken or fish from dinner works perfectly! Or, try tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelet) – it’s easy and adds a sweet touch!
- Veggie Vibes! Think bright and crunchy. Carrots, broccoli, edamame, you name it. Don’t forget the color! Red bell peppers, yellow corn, green edamame – the more colors, the better!

How to Make Your Bento Look Like a Pro Did It (Even if You’re a Total Noob):
- Plan Your Grub: What are you in the mood for? Make a list! Think about what you already have in your fridge too.
- Rice Time! Cook that rice till it’s nice and sticky. If you’re using microwavable rice, just follow the package directions.
- Protein Power-Up! Cook your protein and chop it into bite-sized pieces. Season it up! A little soy sauce, teriyaki, or even just salt and pepper goes a long way.
- Veggie Adventure! Steam, boil, or just munch on some raw veggies.
- Quick veggie hack: Frozen veggies are your friend! Steam them in the microwave for a super fast side.
- Bento Assembly Time!
- Rice goes in first, take up some room! Use a rice scoop to pack it in neatly.
- Protein next, snuggle it up to the rice. Try to arrange it nicely, not just plopping it in.
- Fill in the gaps with your colorful veggies. Think about how the colors look together.
- Add those pickled bits and fruit to finish it off. Place them strategically, not just thrown in.
- Use those little dividers or cups to keep things tidy. These are lifesavers!
- Make it Cute! Sprinkle some sesame seeds, use seaweed cutouts (nori is your friend!), try Furikake, get creative!
Bento Hacks for Lazy Days (We All Have Them) and Busy Moms!:
- Leftovers are Your BFF! Bento is perfect for using up last night’s dinner.
- Onigiri is one of the best! It is a lot easier to make than you expect. It is easy, fast and yummy!
- Pack it Tight! Keeps everything from sliding around in your bag.
- Keep it Safe! Make sure everything’s cooked and stored right.
- Prep ahead! Cook your rice and protein the night before.
- Kid friendly! Let your kids help pick out the vegetables and fruit. They’ll be more likely to eat it if they helped make it.
